Dr. Shannon Barnsley works with children, adolescents, and families with a variety of mental health and behavioural concerns. She treats children and adolescents using evidenced based treatment methods such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT).

 

Dr. Barnsley specializes in the treatment of anxiety, depression and behavioural issues. She also treats children and adolescents who struggle with coping with stress, self-esteem, OCD, habit disorders such as hair pulling and skin picking, assertiveness, social skills and behaviour problems such as non-compliance, defiance and ADHD. She has notable experience in running adolescent depression groups, anxiety treatment groups and parent skills training groups. Dr. Barnsley provides consultation to schools and childcare centres to aid with managing difficult child behaviour. Dr. Barnsley also conducts assessments of ADHD, adaptive functioning (assessment of daily living skills), and psychoeducational assessments to investigate learning disabilities in children and adolescents.

 

Dr. Barnsley received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Ottawa after completing her internship in Child Clinical Psychology at the IWK Children’s Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her Ph.D. Program and Clinical Internship were both accredited by the American Psychological Association and the Canadian Psychological Association. She worked at the IWK Children’s Hospital in the Outpatient Community Mental Health Department prior to moving to Nanaimo. Dr. Barnsley looks forward to providing Nanaimo and it’s neighbouring communities with the same mental health services that she has provided in larger centres. BC College Registration #2071
