Mental Health Assessment and Support
Children and adolescents can experience emotional, behavioural, and developmental challenges that may feel confusing or overwhelming at home, at school, or within relationships. The goal of a mental health assessment is to understand what is happening to cause these behaviours so families can move forward with clarity and confidence.
Understanding Your Child’s Mental Health
Dr. Barnsley’s work focuses on truly understanding your child: clarifying diagnoses, identifying underlying factors, and making sense of behaviours that may feel confusing or overwhelming at home or at school. This process helps create a grounded understanding of your child’s emotional and behavioural needs so the next steps feel clear and appropriate.
Concerns We Help Clarify
Getting to the root cause of a child or adolescent’s mental health difficulty is essential because young people grow and change rapidly, and the right support at the right time can shape long-term development. Dr. Barnsley works with concerns such as:
- Anxiety
- Behaviour challenges
- Depression
- Emotional regulation
- OCD
- Self-esteem
- Social difficulties
- Stress
- ADHD coaching
Support and What to Expect
Evidence-Based Support Options
Depending on the needs identified, support may include evidence-based treatment approaches such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), parent guidance, behavioural strategies, or referral to another specialist when indicated.
Parent and Family Involvement
Families are an important part of the assessment and support process. As understanding improves, communication often becomes easier, parents feel more confident in how to respond, and children gain a stronger sense of self and the ability to advocate for their needs over time.
Appointment Format
Initial consultations are held in person with the child or adolescent and family present, allowing for direct clinical observation and a more complete understanding of your child’s presentation, needs, and family context. When preferred, follow-up and feedback appointments can be offered by Zoom, making it easier for families in Victoria, Nanaimo, and surrounding communities to continue support and review progress.
