Insurance
Private practice psychological services are not covered by BC MSP. However, services provided by a Registered Psychologist may be claimed as a medical expense and are often covered in part or in full through private insurance or extended health benefit plans. Because coverage varies widely, families are encouraged to check directly with their provider. Some plans may list psychological services under Paramedical or Other medical services.
Payments Accepted
Debit/Interac, VISA, MasterCard, cash, and cheques are accepted. There is no tax on psychological services, as this is a health-related service.

Cancellation Policy
Appointment times are reserved specifically for your child. A minimum of 24 hours notice is required to cancel or reschedule so the appointment time may be offered to another family.
Appointments may be changed by phone at 250-412-6919 (Victoria) or 250-591-0702 (Nanaimo), or by email at contactus@drshannonbarnsley.com
Your First Appointment
Before Your Visit
You will receive an intake questionnaire via email to complete so Dr. Barnsley can better understand your child’s history, strengths, and current concerns. If needed, a paper version can also be completed in the clinic.
During the Consultation
You and your child will meet together with Dr. Barnsley to discuss what is currently going well, the challenges your child is experiencing, and any relevant developmental, learning, or emotional background. This conversation helps clarify what type of support, assessment, or treatment may be most helpful.
The appointment also includes a review of consent, confidentiality, and the overall process so families feel comfortable and informed moving forward.
At the End of the Appointment
Dr. Barnsley will share her clinical impressions and recommended next steps, which may include further assessment, treatment, or referral to another specialist if a different area of expertise is needed.
Next Steps and Follow-Up
Following the initial consultation, families can decide whether the proposed plan feels like the right fit. Additional appointments, assessment sessions, feedback meetings, school documentation, reassessment discussions, and Zoom follow-up appointments can be scheduled as needed.
